You know Calvin and Hobbs artist Bill Watterson did a tribute to Tezuka shortly after he died. Calvin was going to cut up for his school pictures and Hobbs did him up with an Astro boy haircut. That strip is to die for!

Wow, I didn't know Tezuka died a year after I was born! Did the Japanese really made his funeral that extravagant, all those newspaper and TV stuff in tribute of him? Tezuka must be really special.

Oh yes he was. Imagine this, when you are non-Christian commissioned by the Holy See (The pope) to make cartoons of the old and new bible testiments for church schools...that is a measure of respect a man earns for his accomplishments in life.

He was one of the orriginal men of the post pacific war defeated Japan who supplied the people with their only means of escape during the rebuilding period. I would say he was the first of everything in Anime, from producing the fandom culture to making anime a social revolution in the United States. Tezuka's characters were truely Japan's first post war ambassadors to a wider world. He also knew how to use the medium as a tool of education, much of what I learned about values and morals I got from Kimba the White Lion and Astroboy in the 1960's

The emotional distrautness of the whole country was genuine, i never saw the Japanese weep so heavily for any person, not even Emperor Hirohito. Tezuka's death was a sudden smack in the national gut. The funeral was a spontanious outpouring of national respect as well as love.

He was so in tune with the fans, That ol man would draw and never ask for money back and he usually had to be begged and pulled from tables at conventions because he'd get tackled by some kids for a drawing and he'd do it.

He was simple, unchanged by success and kind. It is a rare thing for a well known person to have been so uncluttered by the scandals, problems and fame produced vices that doomed others. Tezuka had a rare gift and he sure knew how to use it to benefit others.

Yes indeed, that day in 1989 not just Japan but the world lost a rare human being, he was that special.
