Ohiayo tomodachi(Hi friends)

You know how Astro doesn't cry much in the current or 80's version of Astro. But in the original manga and the 60's anime he could cry buckets. Case in point in the 60's episode no. 1: The Birth of Astro, when he's rejected by his father and he cries "Ya said ya loved me like I was your own flesh and blood" and then later sold to Hamegg, my heart broke watching Astro start to cry and plead to his father "I can't beleive it, ya sold me, ya sold me!"

But that was just the tip of the iceberg. In that episode he just cried a little. In a later episode The Eyes of Christ, which I don't think's been transelated for fear it would offend some Christians. <_< Humph, I saw nothing anti-Christian, did you? I have the raw Japanese version and there's a scene which is also in the original manga so I was able to tell just what Astro's robot father told him that made him cry. First Astro was intrusted with a briefcase that he wasn't supposed to let anyone have. But his robot father had other ideas and wanted to return it to the gangsters and he said "Are you disobeying your father Astro? Continue acting this way, and your're no longer my son!!"

Then something happened that I wasn't expecting, certinally not from the light hearted 60's Astro. Astro's heart broke and he began to cry like I've never seen before. :o It's as if all the misery he'd suffered, starting with the car crash when he was Tobio, his father's rejection when rebuilt as a robot, and then sold to the circus, came pooring out.   This wasn't a comical cry either. This was serious and sad. He bawled his little heart out. The acrtress behind his voice in the 60's and 80's, Shimizu Mari I think, really poured her heart and soul in to this cry, nice job. I cried with Astro, the poor thing  , I wanted to give him a hug. He was shocked to hear his new robot father say the same things his real father had said. He went to his room alone and cried on his pillow all night long, probably cried himself to sleep, if he could sleep. In the manga he ran away from home. In the anime he stayed there and in the morning was sitting outside with his mother still crying.

They were outside waiting for his robot father to show up from giving the briefcase back. His mother finally comforted him, telling him something like his dad didn't mean it and he should go look for him. This creered Astro up some so he went off to find him and he did, but unconcious and damaged by the gangsters that took the briefcase he was carrying.
This started Astro crying again, then he rushed him by ambulence to Ohanomizu's lab where he was repaired and he and Astro made up and his father gave him permision to do his superhero thing.

So there you have it. If you have this episode watch it and see if it doesn't supprise you and move you to tears. I can't resist that cry, it's too good, and I think Astro should cry once in a while. It relieves tension and he needs to do that because there's so much tragedy in his life. I'm sure he feels better later. Also it shows that he's just like a human, after all deep down, he's still Tobio isn't he? ;)

Siaonara.

I read "The Eyes of Christ" and it's one of my favorites. I always wanted to watch it in cartoon form (and the 1960's version is my favorite). Have any idea where to get this episode? ^_^

I haven't really seen him cry in cartoons, but I have seen him cry a few times in the comics. If it was sad to see him in the comics, it must be x5 or x10 sad watching him actually cry. ;;^^

Hi Breakman.

Thanks for your reply. Yes it is very sad to see him cry in the anime version, about 100x more sad than the comics.
Also it is so well animated and the voice of Shimizu Mari is brilliant, the perfect cry. So when you see this episode, let me know if it makes you cry too. ;)

Here's the links where you can get it:
http://www.cdjapan.co.jp/detailview.html?KEY=XT-1273

and:
http://us.yesasia.com/en/PrdDept.aspx/pid-...section-videos/

You can see a track listing at the cd Japan site at the bottom of the page and The Eyes of Christ is episode 13 called Christ no Me in Japanese. I got mine at cd Japan. They have great service with fast shipping and they deliver on Sunday and they give you shoping discount points towards your next order.
Yes asia is cheaper, but Astro box set 1 is all they have left of the 60's series, so grab it quick if you want it from them.

Good luck.

I know what you mean. Everytime I see him cry in the Manga, I just wanna give him a big hug. Especially in one I read where he and Ochanamizu were on this other planet. Astro had left him to confront someone and when he came back, he saw that Ochanamizu had been shot. He held onto him saying "No, you can be. You're the most important human in my life!" (or something like that) and started crying so hard that his tears setting acutally malfunctioned and he couldn't stop. Tear were quite litterally GUSHING out of his eyes. In a more comical moment, but still gave me that same feeling of "aww" something happend to Uran and she was missing. Astro then started crying saying "I'm a bad big brother" He was crying so hard that Ochanamizu was actually first holding an umbrella, then he was swimming, and then he was in a row boat. I thought that was pretty funny, but I still had that need to hug him and comfort him.

Hi Dragonrider,

Thanks for your coment. I know the story your talking about. It's in the Astro manga vol. 13. The story's called Zolomon's Jewels, and it's one of my favorites. That cry stands out as one of the best cries in the manga. I'm going to check if there was an anime veerion of that story at the Tezuka site. If there was I'll watch it and compare cries.

Another good one is in the The Astro Boy Tales Part 1 in vol. 6. It shows Astro realizing that he's stuck in the past and he starts to cry. The alien girl Scara comforts and hugs him and he cries on her chest. Aww!, that's so sweet. I love it when someone comforts Astro, it makes me feel good. :)
The poor kid needs a hug doesn't he?

Oh yeah, in fact much of Astro's life makes me think he could really use a hug.

I believe I read Tezuka's comment on that episode being outright rejected by the American (NBC) editors. I cannot recall the exact volume, though. but I recently read 1-2 & 22-23. I think he was speaking about objections to violence in general, & mentioned The Eyes of Christ, as an example. ;)
