Hi Jarvic.

I have all 52 episodes of the new series in the original Japanese with English subs. There were 2 episodes that featured Daddy Walrus, and yes he's been reduced to just a pet detective <_< , no longer Astro's teacher. As far as his relationship with Yuko, he's her Uncle. In that episode Astro makes friends with him and they solve a case together. In a later ep. he solves a case with Astro's sister Uran.

It's frustrating that that's all they did with the character. After all he's one of Tezuka's favorites and he's been around since the late 1940's. Ohh well, what can you do.
Maybe in the next Astro series he'll be a main chartater again.

Wasn't the character based on Osamu's teacher or drill sargeant?

He's only in TWO episodes??? What a rip!! I remember in the 80's series, the first ep with Uran, when he called up Dr Elefun on New Year's Eve and he was just plastered... I could imagine both him and the Doc out at the pub getting wasted...
[drunk slurred voice]
oh ya.. your the best... hick! pour me another. Arrr!
ya... oh that poor kid... he does so much... we gotta do something for him... he's so sweet... it's heartbreaking what he went through.. (burp) I know... letzzdo a bi birfduh [thump!]
[/drunk slurred voice]

Well at least I can say I've seen both eps with the guy... too bad I couldn't really understand it... Man YTV should continue the series... even if it's on at like 5am... I could at least tape it.. I mean they show Hamtaro* 3x a day.... come on...

And he's Yuko's Uncle?! Sheez, they have a dark past or something? It was like he tried to say hi to her and the next thing you know, he's kissing the concrete! I obviously missed something here....

I wonder if I can grow a big 'stache like he had. All my food would probably get caught in it though.. soak up all my soup.

:) :) :) :wahah:
Well guess what!? VRAK-TV is still showing new episodes of the new series, they didn't go back to the start when they changed the timeslot! I just saw two episodes with some sort of shape-shifting creature and a character which I think you all know as "Black Jack". I'm not sure. Kind of a young man wearing a suit and sunglasses. In the 2nd episode that shape shifting creature turned into that big ornamental looking swan-bird, the one on the wall behind Astro in Cybotron's sig.

And guess what episode showed today (Christmas day).
THIS ONE! http://www.astroboy-online.com/forums/inde...ct=ST&f=1&t=917

Very cute. Although I am going to have to re-watch it as at I think some minor scenes might have been cut out. The picture marked 9:32 (last one at the very bottom, right) I don't remember from the ep but I could have just barely missed it. The time shows it could have been right at the beginning of the ep but the first time I saw astro was when he came through the door wearing that boy-scout uniform.

Alas, still, too bad it's in french but at least it's watchable...

Is there anyone else watching? VRAK-TV 3:00pm EST every day even weekends... man this series is just chugging along now, it'll be over before I know it. :(

Hi Jarvic,

The young charater in the 2 part episode was Rock. He originaly was a detective character from Tezuka's late 1940's manga. He played a villan in the movie Metropolis(recent), and in Vampire(60's), also in a 60's Astro ep. called Black Looks, but Tezuka had him play the hero and Princess Sapphire's boy-friend Prince Franz, in the Princess Knight anime('67-'68). Later he was the hero and detective again in the 80's Astro ep. The Time Machine, which also had Princess Knight and Black Jack.

He's one of Tezuka's "Actors" and he can play both hero and villan and equally convincing as both. In Metropolis, he's the person you love to hate. In Princess Knight, he's a perfect gentleman to Princess Sapphire. Speaking of Sapphire, She's the one flurting with Astro in the spoof of Roxane, of course she's in her flaxin-haired mode. She's like Madonna, always changing hair color and clothes, very fashion concience. Rock goes ga-ga over her too :wahah:  .

The ornamental swan-bird is the Pheonix bird. Tezuka did a whole series of manga and anime about this bird, which he considered his life's most important work. This character also made cameos with many other characters like Astro. There is a great 60's episode in which Astro and Uran save a pheonix bird egg and return it to it's family.

Which serie? 1960? 1980? 2000? To my knowledge he "died" twice but was "resurrected" at least once.
In the 1960 serie, he was "killed" in the last episode to end the serie.
In the 1980 serie, he was never "killed".
In the 2000 serie, something happened to him that caused him to be "dead" in the 49th episode (he was revived during the episode). I didn't see the 48th episode so I don't know what happened.
The real sign that someone has become a fanatic is that he completely loses his sense of humor about some important facet of his life. When humor goes, it means he's lost his perspective.

Hi. Just wanted to post this in case there are lurkers who are watching. (Hey, I lurked here for a good 6 months at least, pulling stuff off Anapan's server ;) )

VRAK-tv is changing their schedule again. On Monday January 3rd, Astro Boy moves to 8:00am Mon-Fri, and 2:00pm Sat&Sun. Which means once again I keep my fingers crossed that they don't go back to the start of the series with the schedule shuffling. It's probably not long to the end of the series anyways, today's episode was something with Yuko and some large brown robot named Shackleton? at the North (South?) pole or something. -_-

Other things I wanted to mention as the series moves along.
1. Katari is a grade-A A-hole. It's really too bad the Blue Knight can't tear him a new one, because if he does or if any other robot kills/harms him out of vengeance, then Katari wins. <_<

2. I'm disappointed in (the return of) Atlas. He wasn't even himself until the last few minutes. :(

3. Also saw the ep where Astro's nominated for Best Robot of 2003, where they're all on a cruise ship. Can really see the difference between NTSC and the original format. The back of Astro's head was cut off in the scene that was captured for the "Caption the Picture" game (see below): When he's all duded up and is talking to Epsilon in front of a large window. Astro tells Eppie that he's her new pimp and to get out there and make him some money. Just kidding. No idea what they talked about, it's in french. Though I think Astro did say the sunset looked really nice. He sure looked cute when he was being interviewed in his classroom at the beginning. :)
