It looks like Atlas killed his creator, but Guiss appears in another episode: "the anti-proton gun".

Now, there's this immediately question that I know people like Jeffbert can answer. Why was the whole Atlas story removed from the Western release?[/quote]
Someone (maybe Jeffbert) hypothetized it was too dark because of abuses on Atlas by his masters. Personally, what move me (almost as much as Tobio's death in the hospital) are Atlas' terrible injuries and his crawling return. Although the scene when Tobio dies could be removed without problem, it was not the case for Atlas' injuries: the story would have been difficult to conclude.
Anyway, finding the reason of why half the story was removed is about finding what went through the editors' mind :P

It could also be an issue of the two episodes requiring continuity--something US broadcasting companies never seemed too keen about. Yes, it is a very dark way to start the series (even with edits it remains pretty dark), but now you always have to play episode 1 & 2 in that order.

The one scene that took me completely by surprise first time I watched it is Livian's electrocution as she takes Boy Atlas' hand. That was sort of unexpected.
Her cute servant's dress just instantly went up in smoke. She must have had a few spare ones in case such accidents happen :P .

After watching the cut out scenes on the Extra DVD it occured to me that one particular scene is missing, namely this one at the beginning of 'Uran The Tomboy':

Good thing I still have my pirated DVDs I bought sometime in march '04.

Yeah, this scene is such nonsense violence, it had to be removed <_<

Seriously, what happens in editors' mind

I just finished the 80's Astro tin box and it was well worth the money. I don't have time now, but I'll post the pros and cons of the set later. I also have the Japanese box set 2 for the 80's series which has the last half of the series, so I can compare English and Japanese eps. The extras didn't have everything that was cut, still no Astro bowing in kimono robe, like in Cybotron's signature. :( Still, the tin box set is great, so buy it. ;)

Thought I might add the only complaint I could find about the tin box was in Uran's Quest.
Ok, at the end when Uran finds out that Dr. Elefun is her "God" and Dr. Elefun says "Yes, if that's the way you want to look at it", and she says "NO!". Well, there was a audio hiccup at a crucial moment, making her say "NO" too soon, before her mouth moved, throwing the timing off and ruining the joke. <_< Ohh well, at least the tape version is in sync.

Actually I did not notice that hiccup. I did notice the rather bad sync in Greatest robot in the world Part One, and the dodgy sound at the end of Crystal of the desert tho.

All in all its a beautiful job imo. Without actually going back and cleaning every frame, and replacing re-recording some of the dialogue / spundtrack I do not think they could have done it any better.

Only one question left now. What am I supposed to do with my complete set of VHS tapes now?
three and a half years.. for what?

Astro bowing in his kimono IS in the extras.

Hmm, too bad this is only the first half of the series...it had occured to me that 52 episodes didn't seem like a series, but I guess these are the only ones that made it to the western world???
