Ohaio, Tomodachi(Hi, friends)

I decided to post a new thread about the remaining half of the 60's series that wasn't dubbed,(almost 100 eps.)since I've been watching them on dvd.
That's right, we may complain about the butchering of 80's Japanese episodes 1 and 2 and a few cuts here and there of other eps. of that series, but the 60's censors skipped nearly 100 eps. :o

I won't summerise the eps. here, but talk about why they censored them.
Here's one in perticular: The Yellow Horse.
It's about Astro going undercover to bust drug smuggling gangsters. Ok one thing the censors probably didn't like was that Astro got naked, well sort of. Inspector Tawashi says that Astro's skin isn't human enough to go undercover as a human child, so he hands him some artificial skin made out of nylon, looks like a flesh colored body-stocking. Astro puts it on and Tawashi puts a wig on his head. Now he looks like a naked human boy. Astro checks himself out and coments on how well the nylon looks like real skin, then he pulls and stretches it. Well that seen alone probably made the censors crazy.

The main reason it was banned was because later after fully clothed of course, Astro goes undercover to a drug den and gets himself injected, twice mind you, with a drug known as Yellow Horse. Hmm, looks like heroene to me. It really doesn't have an affect on him, but he acts crazy just the same. Ok in the 60's in my country there was a growing drug culture, and the last thing the censors wanted was kids seeing there idol doing heroene.

I'm pretty sure this was banned in the states, because I didn't see it listed here:

I wish I could post some images of the "naked" scene and the injection scenes. The story was from the manga, so you can see it there if you can't watch it. I forgot which volume though, sorry.

Thank you Strange Wings.

I've seen those fuel taking scenes before and it's a wonder they got passed the censors.
I haven't seen the episode where someone is pulling on his briefs though  , that may have been censored. What episode is it from, and what the hell are those things pulling on Astro, elephant trunks? I don't think it was dubbed, because I've seen all the dubbed ones, available on tape anyway. Eventually I'll see it in the raw Japanese when I've seen all 193 episodes.

Nooooo! :o :(

Here's another episode that was banned in States. It's the last one, episode 193, in which Astro sacrafices himself, by flying a bomb into the sun, to save the world. :( Hmm, don't know why he didn't just through it into the sun instead.

Well I can see why it was banned in the States. Evan in Japan nobody liked it and Tezuka was flooded with letters of protest.
So if you see this episode(I know I'll watch it just once)and your heart breaks, read the manga sequal in vol. 22 and you'll feel better. Yay, he's saved. :)

You caught me baffled either. I have no idea from which episode this pic was taken from, but this arms grabing at Astro's legs and briefs indeed look like elephant trunks. It could be some scene in a circus, cause it kinda looks very much like a 'Trapeze-act'.
I'm sure jeffbert would know in which ep this scene shows up. :)

I guess he wanted to be certain that the bomb won't miss the sun, so he sat on it to control its direction. Also the missile's reach wouldn't have been enough to defy the distance earth/sun.
This must be a very sad episode. I don't think I could take it to watch Astro die  .

15th story Yellow Horse date: 1955 DH vol #: 10 start page: 59

Both Niki & Uran are naked on the table in the 80s series, but this was never shown in the USA.

In the manga, there is a time-travel story, in which Atom meets a little 'boy' who is clearly indentifiable as a a boy, because he runs around naked. 'boy' because he has a tail. No, not a tail in front, but a tail in back, thus making him pre-human. He does have a male part, but that is in front. :D

In reference to these pics, the first one I found in an article about Atom's pants. I know nothing of the episode in which it appeared. I suspect the items in question are tentacles. These seem to be very popular in anime, as evidenced by the opening credits sequence (80s). The other two I found while watching tapes.

It wasn't so much that the missing 91 episodes were censored - the translators simply picked a chunk of 104 episodes for translation, starting from the beginning. Only a handful were skipped over because their content wasn't appropriate.

Fred Ladd, director of the English series:
Astro Boy began with Mushi's #1, and generally stayed in Mushi's sequence, but we had to reject 6 of their shows, for various reasons: one dealt with vivisection (unacceptable here as kids' content at the time); one dealt with a bachelor who had pictures of nude women hanging on his walls; one (Christ's Eyeballs) dealt with a criminal hiding out in a church and scratching a secret message to his cohorts on the eyeballs of a statuette of Christ, (in Buddhist Japan, nobody at the studio objected).

Yellow Horse, of course, was rejected due to drug themes.

Thanks for the info DrFrag,

But evan though they only skipped a few for censorship reasons, the fact that they skipped so many, almost half the series, is a shame :( . I think for the dvd box set coming out soon they should offer all the skipped ones subbed(including the rare few filmed in color)in addition to the Billie Lou Watt dubs. It'll make the price more expensive, but at least it would be the complete 193 episodes.

Please Madman, this would be great.

In re to drug themes, I rememer Stan The Man talking about Spiderman comics involving the Green Goblin. That issue was the only one rejected by the Comics Code. It dealt with drugs, but in a very positive way. He said that others (priests, and those concerned about youths, etc) were very optimistic about that story, because it showed drug use as folly. ;) I do not remember the Yellow Horse story, but I will guess that it, likewise showed drug use as folly. However, seeing that little kids rather than teenagers were the target audience, I Can see why they rejected it at that time. Nevertheless, Astroboy is a kids' comic, with various stories being published in various things, ranging from a Second Grader magazine, to Shonen magazine.
