Ah, I just realised what the deal is with his feet.

In the first couple of episodes, before he gets his boots, his feet don't have toes. They have small red shoe things that retract when he flies. After he gets boots, they're covered up until the final episode, where he takes them off to show he has Niki's legs installed (complete with toes).

I hope I'm not the last person to get this!

Chinese Simplified (HZ) worked for me.

"Can demonstrate Chinese?"
"I am unable to read Chinese, but I can use the net translator."

So much for that theory! I wonder if that's a mistake in the first episode then, the way his feet change. Or maybe they actually are shoes.

Yes, those look like either boy's dress shoes, like they wore in the early to mid 20th century or maybe they're some form of Japanese spippers. He wore them a lot in the manga, about as often as his boots.
