I think that there just might be a method to the madness of the episodes getting mixed up in the 80s and the new 2k3 cartoon series.

Not that long ago I started reading the Astro Boy mangas, (the translated reprints from Dark Horse), and I learned that Tezuka himself shuffled the order of manga stories after their completion. He re-organized them in the order he wanted them to be read rather than the order in which they were written. I still don't completely understand what this was all about.

Anyway, although Tezuka obviously had nothing to do with the recent series, (with him being deceased and all :P ), he WAS involved in the 80s series. I think he passed away before it was completed though. Also he worked with the american studios in bringing the Astro Boy cartoons to North America, (he mentions on several occasions in the mangas about being annoyed with things the american studios wanted to edit and so forth.)

With all that said, is it possible that the episodes were reorganized for a reason? (Especially in the case of the 80s series, since Tezuka was actually involved there.)

According to one of the voice actors, the changed episode order of the 80s series was done by the Japanese. They were simply sent a new tape and script each week.
The 2003 series, however, was only broadcast in the wrong order in the USA. Australia had the same order as the Japanese version, so I suspect this was simply a change made in America (they rushed to get Atlas into the action - US versions are known for pushing the action element before serial consistency).

The problem was he didn't write them in order. The Birth of Astroboy, for example, was written 24 years after he started writing Astroboy manga. And because he went back and changed things, it didn't make sense to publish them in the order they were written.

He lived another 8 years or so after the 80s series was finished. The problem he had with the American changes went back to the early sixties when they edited the first animated series.
This might explain why it was the Japanese who made most of the edits to the 80s series. At least that way they had control over what was cut.

I think you're right, but I can only see it applying to the 80s series.

I fully agree that the US editors wanted the heaviest action in the first few weeks, hoping to attract the largest audience thereby. However, it seems that they perhaps placed the show in a highly competitive time-slot, and besides the fact that it was a family rather than a kids' show, they attempted to make it something that it was not. I will defer on this, because it has been discussed elsewhere.

Anyway, the obvoius paradox of Uran being created after her first appearance in the 2-part story with Pluto, was weird, but not too bad because she was not a regularly appearing in the episodes between these. So, by the time she is created, the children will likely have forgotten about her earlier appearance.
