Is there a reason why the dark side uses red lightsabers?

Red in occidental culture is associated with war, and by extension to strong negative feelings like hate. This comes of course from the color of blood
If I am not mistaken, red is the color of life in Japan, and maybe in many other oriental countries. Is it the case in Philippines?

I do not really know if red is the color of evil here in the Phillipines because our country are divided into many islands and each of those islands have different cultures in it. Some,very ethnic.

You know, I've finally come to a decision regarding Lucas. I'm just going to stop treating the man like he's smart. I've seen documentaries about him emphasizing his deep understanding of folklore and storytelling and his connections to Joseph Campbell, but honestly, like any educated person I've read Campbell too, and what Lucas takes from Campbell you could get from reading the blurbs on the back of his books.

I'm tired of thinking there is any depth behind Lucas's designs or story--honestly, I find it remarkable at this late date that Star Wars ever worked at all; it is afterall a pretty wacky sci-fi pulp story that lacks both the maturity of good science fiction or the true strangeness of the pulps. Star Wars is the stuff of future power metal albums!

It all hits home when you realize Lucas has never really made a good film...well, maybe one. A new hope was probably some lucky accident, a work of dedication and love that would have put him in the poor house forever if it failed.

Lucas didn't make Empire.

Return of the Jedi? *sighs* Willow? *even bigger sigh* The new star wars movies??? c'mon!

Why do people give Lucas the credit for having put so much thought into everything he's done--I think if anything the fans have done more to create the star wars universe than Lucas ever did.

Then of course he keeps making his movies worse (I refuse to buy the 'improved' versions of star wars).

Actually, when it comes down to it, I think Lucas is out right nuts, and if the light sabers of the bad guys are all red, its probably because he thought it looked cool at the time

Sorry to be so down on the man, but as someone who saw A New Hope as a kid at its premier and grew up convinced that Star Wars WAS the greateest thing ever, perspective adds something. You start to see all the things you thought were cool or insightful and realize they were just ripped right out of something else, and when Lucas finally did get his chance to do things precisely the way he wanted, we get a sort of sci-fi disney out of the man.

I am not anti-lucas, but I do believe the Star Wars Franchise is WAY over-rated. I do not think there is any real reason or at least depth of reason behind the sabre colors. The first movie (A new hope) was too generic for there to be anything deep and / or meaninful in there. That is what made it so damn cool tho imo. the "guy in white" was the good guy, the "guy in black" was the bad guy. THe sabre colors were more than likely choosen cos They matched the over-all look that he was going for with the character wielding it.

Gotta say its an interesting question to ask. How on earth would you even think of that? I mean, why was it something worth thinking about? Where does a question like that come from?

Go on.. admit it.. you just thought of some really blah question and posted it just too see what sort of reaction you would get and have a laugh at our expense.

You're a bit hard
If you had noticed that all dark side adepts lightsabers were green, you would surely have wonder why. That's how things must look like to oriental people for whom red is a positive color without association to evil notions.

Concerning Star Wars franchise, it's true that it is both simplistic and over-exploited.
Star Wars universe, at least the one shown in the (soon) 6 movies is very manichean: completely good guys against completely bad guys, all of them easy to classify ( except maybe for the hidden one, you know which one I mean ).
Star Wars is sold in every way: improved old movies sold at the price of new ones, expensive figurines, several games per year sometimes using the same design/game engine, the examples can go on forever...
However that doesn't mean it is bad, at least for me: I sometimes enjoy simple movies with big special effects and similar games that differs only in maps

This is something that really bugged my about the Han Solo / Greedo edit. Originally Han shot the bounty hunter without warning, then they changed it so Greedo shot first and missed by a mile (ya right).
What's wrong with Han shooting first? Do all the good guys have to be ridiculously pure? This guy was a smuggler. The grittiness of his character was what made him cool and a lot more realistic.
