I'm seeing a lot of Astroboy cels on EBay recently that appear to be from some kind of Astroboy/Tezuka special from 2003.

One auction reads:
"This cel comes from the Astroboy TV Special where all the characters of Tezuka Osamu came to life in one episode."

I haven't seen the whole 2003 series but I'm pretty sure it's not one of the episodes. Astro didn't have joint lines on his limbs and chest in the 2003 series.
Does anyone know anything about it?

Interesting, thanks for sharing these images. Looks like the princess and the doctor from the 80s "Time Machine" episode are in the special. Are they more important characters in some other Tezuka series?

I haven't heard about that special either, so I can't help, but it's definitely not from the 2003 series.

Yeah, the princess had her own series called Ribbon Knight. The doctor is Black Jack, he has his own anime, OAV, movie and live series. His assistant Pinnoko is the girl with the bows.
I don't know who the guy with three eyes is, but he had his own story too. Hamegg (tied up) appears in heaps of stuff as a generic bad guy.

Definately not the 2000, nor the 1980...
I am quite surprised with the second image:

Astro's arms seem very badly drawn
As for the 3-eyed character, I don't know very much. I just know he appears in episode 27. He also appears in the Gameboy Advance game "Astroboy Omega Factor" under the name Sharaku, as an evil magician at the head of an empire in the past. A tough boss ;)
The real sign that someone has become a fanatic is that he completely loses his sense of humor about some important facet of his life. When humor goes, it means he's lost his perspective.

About that dude with the three eyes..his name is indeed Sharaku as Fafner said. It's called "The Three Eyed One".. and they should bring a translated version of the manga over here..
The manga

The Anime

Some 85 minute movie..

Three cheers for the Tezuka site..

That special looks interesting..I must see it..All the characters look all nice shiny..mmm..shiny.

I almost thought this was Undersea super train marine express, because it has most of these characters/actors in it, but Sapphire is not dressed for the part.

She wore islander type clothing. The 3 eyed one was the villian, Rock was Atom's human brother Ochanomizu was his creator/papa, Don Dracula was 3 eyes' henchman, & Higeoyagi was the comic-relief, nearly everything happened to him. :wahah: Skunk, Duke Red, Blackjack & Pinoko, Boon, Hamegg, Leo, Tezuka, plus a few others were in it.

Wow, I totally missed that! I don't think it would show up on TV though. Take this cel for example:

The part of the cel that was used is this area:

And after the border was cropped by the edge of the TV screen:

So this is how much of the original cel was used:

I suspect in the picture with Astro's long arms, the artist thought "stuff it, hands are hard to draw and they're not going to get in the shot anyway".
Either that or the Princess has just been shopping for some new hands.

Tezuka Osamu Collection - 20 Century Last Miracle?????

Yeah that must be it. (aka The Last Mystery of the 20th Century)
