How about some short stories? Perhaps a few quick 2 or 3 paged scene shorts of Astro and the people of Metro City doing everyday things from say rollerblading to school to being at home?

Setting: It’s the day the Metro City Congress passes the Robot Rights Law. From a dim alcove overlooking the Presidium chamber, Astro leans against a wall listening to the words of his guardian and teacher Doctor O’Shay with a feeling of exhaustion, but it’s surely more a result of giddiness than anything.

“Well, well.” Came a familiar voice from behind. “Looks like you won after all little brother.”

Astro looked back to see Atlas, he could tell it was Atlas from the face…and his red hair. But he wasn’t cladded in his tough battle armor shell nor in any sort of biker “bozo” costume he’d wear when raising heck on his Mars bike…

“Hmph…” Astro sounded as he smiled. “That suit is way to “human” isn’t it?”

Atlas played with the jacket. “If I’d come out looking like my usual spike headed self we’d probably be throwing down inside the chamber.” Atlas walked to the opening in the alcove and looked down at the floor as the Congress was ending its session. “Like I said…it looks as if you won. I don’t know if I’ll be ready to accept it though. I still find humans from experience to be an untrustworthy lot.”

Astro walked up to Atlas and grabbed a hand. “Comeon….you want to go eat someplace?”

Atlas smirked. “We don’t need to eat.”

Astro pulled. “You can’t turn me down, I insist.”

(They walk a few blocks away from the Congress building and arrive at….)

Minami Sushi House

“Sushi? You eat sushi?” Atlas asked Astro, who rocked back and forth on his toes.

“Ah huh…My friends Kennedy and Timao got me hooked on it.”

Atlas smiled. “You know….this was the one thing my….”father”….never got me to eat.”

“I also remember he told me you hated squash but you can not escape this!” Astro said holding up a finger. “If you refuse to honor my request for dinner then I’ll go around bragging that Atlas the big tough biker is afraid of fish and rice.”

“Pushy aren’t we little brother?” Atlas snorted. “Ok…I’ll accept your challenge then.”

(An hour later Astro and Atlas have vanished behind a pile of sushi plates at their booth)

“Burrrrrrrp!” Astro sat back burping and patting his belly. “Mmmmmmm….the Unagi rolls in this place are to die for.”

Atlas rested against the wall of their stall and took a sip of the wine he’d asked for. “I almost forgot how food tastes. Tenma gave me the ability but I didn’t see the need for it. That’s what so unique about you Astro…you can actually enjoy a good meal. O’Shay made you a soft robot.”

“I don’t see anything “soft” in being with my friends.” Astro said as he paid a waiter. “It’s obvious nothing’s really changed in you even with the new law.”

Atlas pointed a finger. “It was a human who said…the price for freedom is eternal vigilance. Given human history, you really can’t put a blind faith on anything they do.”

Astro stood up. “I think part of your thinking is because of Daichi.”

Both robots walked out into the cool evening air. Astro’s comment did make Atlas boil a bit but he stopped to compose himself as he remembered he was at least going to try and understand his little brother.

“I consider having Daichi’s memories a big asset. They remind me of human ugliness.”

Astro turned. “And I don’t have such memories? I know enough about Tobio Tenma that I could have become like you but I chose not too. And my faith in humans is not blinded at all. Sure humans do some real dumb things Atlas but they also do wonderful and great things and it’s that part we should help the most.”

Daichi stopped by a small park and sat on the wall. “So there was good in Tokugawa and Tenma? Two men who all but abandoned their own sons out of self-granding obsessions? You and I are their product, two attempts by selfish men to redo their wasted lives and where did it come too?”

Astro moaned. “Yes we were handed a raw deal, I admit it. Daichi Tokugawa and Tobio were both good kids. Daichi may have become a rebellious biker punk but he was still kind hearted, gifted. Tobio died out of anger against how his father treated robots. We were built with their memories and with the good sense of how to best use them despite the ugliness that sneaks up on us every now and then.”

Atlas groaned. “Perhaps I’ll never understand the concept, or I’m too bull headed to get it right. All I know is that humans should never be given our complete trust, I just …”

Astro sat back on the wall. “You need to face Tokugawa and offer him forgiveness.”

“What?” Atlas snorted. “Forgive him?”

“It’s not easy.” Astro said as he showed Atlas some areas of darkened skin on his body. “Tenma had this control ring when I confronted him on level 17 of the Ministry. He could have easily killed me. He hit me again and again and I should have taken off but I think I was being told inside to….forgive him.”

Atlas moaned. “I can’t….”

Astro patted him. “It’s a powerful thing to forgive Atlas. Tokugawa has been thinking nothing but you for a while now. He honestly wishes for another chance. I forgave Tenma and it was like a great weight was taken from us.”

Atlas started to get up but Astro cut him off. “No….don’t do this Atlas…don’t run off from me again, you can’t just keep running away from it.”

Atlas calmly pushed Astro aside and patted his arms. “Maybe someday I’ll get what you think kid…someday, but not now. But I’ll still wish you all the best and hope you never have to regret being who you are.”

Atlas slowly nudged Astro’s cheek with a fist and walked off.

“sigh”….”Someday big brother….someday.”

"You guys have some serious Mommy issues."
