Does anybody remember Ham Egg (Cacciatore)'s name in the 80s series. I think Cathy called him 'chief,' but no proper name was used.

Cinescape: ASTRO BOY: VOLUME 1 calls him Cacciatore, but I do not remember hearing that name.

I am building a table of English names throughout the incarnations, so I could use some help. It will be possible to check the VHS, but time-consuming.

DrFrag himself called him Hamegg, but then I don't know if he heard the name in the episode itself... I have a few minutes now, I'll check! B)

I think the boss calls him "Hamegg", I've just heard it but to be honest, I don't understand much of that part of the sentence very well! It's right after Tornado exploded. Usually Tornado and Cathy call Hamegg "boss".

The "Boss of Chicago", as HamEgg called him- some Don or Godfather type of character, from what I gathered.

Anyway, he says "Tough luck, HamEgg, there goes yer contract."

I always wondered why they chose to keep his original Jap. name in the 80s series.

Probably because "ham egg" are English words, after all. I think they kept Jump's name too (which sounded like "Jumpa" if I recall correctly).

What would you say his "true" name is? Is it Hamegg or Cacciatore? Which do you think of when you see his face?

Osamu Tezuka created the character named "Ham Egg." However, just as Daffy Duck & Porky Pig are cast in various roles such as Duck Dodgers, The Scarlet Pumpernickel, and as themselves, sometimes Tezuka cast his characters--or actors in roles as themselves and sometimes as--or rather named differently.

Then there are the names that translators such as Fredd Ladd gave to these actors. 'Cacciatore' is Fred Ladd's first name for Ham Egg in the Astroboy series. However, Ham Egg makes about 7 or 8 appearances in this series, and both Tezuka and Ladd have given him other names.

There were numerous appearances in other series, "Jungle Emperor Leo" or "Kimba the White Lion" as Ladd named it is one that comes to mind. I am not sure about Ham Egg's Japanese name, but believe it was 'Ham Egg'; However, his English name was "Viper Snakely."
The data I have on Ham Egg's names is probably less extensive than either his Tezuka Osamu World page or Tezuka-in-English page has.

I just checked T-in-E, & found very little. But TOW has a bit more:
Hamegg's main page

Hamegg's performance list

Personally, I really only know most of the characters by their Japanese names. I sometimes get confused if someone calls them by other names!
(Hmm.. I don't really like many of the English names anyway... :d oh :)

However, if you ever need to compile a list of Japanese names, however, I would be glad to help you~
