Canada Astro Boy

Postby magu2k » 18 years ago

HI everyone,

My first post here, I also live in Canada and recall watching it on TV here. I definately also remember Dr. Elefun being Dr. Peabody. When I saw some of the DVD episodes I was like.. Elefun? What/? Also, I recall that there was a mistake of some sorts in teh episode and Astro would ask you to watch for whatever it was. I don't really recall what sort of things they were.. such as visual anomolies? Probably more likely audible anomolies such as saying a strange word that doesn't belong, as I doubt the animation was changed for us. But after watching the 51 DVD episodes, I seem to vaguely recall tehre being other battles I saw that were not in the DVD set. I used to watch it early in teh AM on school mornings I would get up at like 5:30 and watch it and Wizard of Oz or Rocket Robin Hood, later on I think Teddy Ruxpin was on? THat may have been a lot later. :astro:

Welcome magu2k! :)

I saw the series in French. In the game at the end, the video wasn't altered, but it's not impossible that Astro made a mistake while speaking of something visual (ex.: "... the girl had a green dress" - I'm making this up just as an example, I can't remember many of the answers).

I'd be surprised if there were battles that were not included in the US or Australian DVD set since our series was so heavily censored and theirs weren't. It's the other way around: there were many battles we didn't get to see. (A funny example is the one in "The Runaway Subway Train": we do not see it in the episode but there are flashbacks of it in "Atlas Forever"! ).

Since this is a topic about Canada, the French version of the 1980 Astroboy was released today!!! :w00t: :w00t: :w00t: (Of course, it's already been released in Europe, and the dubbing and cuts are identical, just not the credits and voices in the game).

Unfortunately, only the French audio is available. It's too bad, I would have liked to be able to see the English Canadian dubbing too, and since by all accounts the cuts were identical, it wouldn't have been hard to do.

They sound very well! :D I've heard the Japanense, English and French dubbing and I think the French voices are the best.

You can check Anapan's server if you want to hear them.

BTW, the French voices for the 2003 series were also really good, much better than the English version IMO.

The real sign that someone has become a fanatic is that he completely loses his sense of humor about some important facet of his life. When humor goes, it means he's lost his perspective.

I may know something about the fate of the Canadian dub.
My mother has worked at a TV station that used to run Astro Boy, and has told me that all she remembers is that the dub was made by the animation/dubbing company Nelvana. She recommends checking through them.
Somebody has to own the tapes. There used to be about 15-20 reels at the station, but it's unknown if they were destroyed [with the rest of the old program reels] or taken in by somebody within the station.
Keep looking around, though. [By the way, French Astro is available on Youtube. I've checked]
