Upcoming 'horror' & scifi films on TCM

Postby jeffbert » 17 years ago

Several gems & a few turkeys coming in July:

4 Friday
11:30 AM Psycho (1960)
A woman on the run gets mixed up with a repressed young man and his violent mother. Cast: Anthony Perkins, Janet Leigh, Vera Miles. Dir: Alfred Hitchcock. BW-109 mins, TV-PG, CC, Letterbox Format

3:45 PM Birds, The (1963)
In a California coastal area, flocks of birds unaccountably make deadly attacks on humans. Cast: Rod Taylor, Tippi Hedren, Jessica Tandy. Dir: Alfred Hitchcock. C-119 mins, TV-14, CC, Letterbox Format

After these two Hitchcock films, most of the rest are B-grade. :p

5 Saturday
6:00 AM Dr. Jekyll And Mr. Hyde (1941)
A scientist's investigations into the nature of good and evil turn him into a murderous monster. Cast: Spencer Tracy, Ingrid Bergman, Lana Turner. Dir: Victor Fleming. BW-113 mins, TV-PG, CC, DVS
8:00 AM On Borrowed Time (1939)
An old man and his grandson trap Death in a tree. Cast: Lionel Barrymore, Cedric Hardwicke, Beulah Bondi. Dir: Harold S. Bucquet. BW-99 mins, TV-G, CC

This 2nd film, although not a horror, does include a rather unusual plot element. Lionel Barrymore's character requests Death to euthanize his crippled grandson in an era when NOBODY ever even talked about euthanasia! I was flabbergasted when I first saw this, it was so very out of place! :hyo:

19 Saturday
4:00 PM King Kong (1933)
A film crew discovers the "eighth wonder of the world," a giant prehistoric ape, and brings him back to New York, where he wreaks havoc. Cast: Fay Wray, Robert Armstrong, Bruce Cabot. Dir: Merian C. Cooper, Ernest B. Schoedsack. BW-105 mins, TV-PG, CC, DVS

6:00 PM Soylent Green (1973)
A future cop uncovers the deadly secret behind a mysterious synthetic food. Cast: Charlton Heston, Edward G. Robinson, Leigh Taylor-Young. Dir: Richard Fleischer. C-97 mins, TV-MA, CC, Letterbox Format

EG Robinsons' last film

Boris & Bela together:
22 Tuesday

6:30 PM Body Snatcher, The (1945)
To continue his medical experiments, a doctor must buy corpses from a grave robber. Cast: Boris Karloff, Henry Daniell, Bela Lugosi. Dir: Robert Wise. BW-78 mins, TV-PG, CC

4 in a row, incuding Bela Lugosi's very last film:
24 Thursday
6:00 AM Man From Planet X, The (1951)
A space visitor uses hypnotic powers to enslave a Scottish island. Cast: Margaret Field, Raymond Bond, William Schallert. Dir: Edgar G. Ulmer. BW-71 mins, TV-PG, CC

7:30 AM Riders To The Stars (1954)
Early astronauts try to solve the mysteries of space travel by capturing a meteor. Cast: Richard Carlson, Herbert Marshall, William Lundigan. Dir: Richard Carlson. C-80 mins, TV-G

9:00 AM Plan 9 From Outer Space (1959)
Aliens bring the dead to life to conquer the Earth. Cast: Bela Lugosi, Tor Johnson, Vampira. Dir: Edward D. Wood, Jr. BW-78 mins, TV-PG

10:30 AM It Came From Beneath the Sea (1955)
A giant octopus attacks San Francisco. Cast: Kenneth Tobey, Faith Domergue, Donald Curtis. Dir: Robert Gordon. BW-79 mins, TV-PG, CC, Letterbox Format

30 Wednesday

8:15 AM Most Dangerous Game, The (1932)
A big game hunter decides to stalk human prey. Cast: Joel McCrea, Fay Wray, Leslie Banks. Dir: Irving Pichel. BW-63 mins, TV-PG

This was made concurrently with K Kong on the same island with many of the same sets. However, as horror films of that time go, it is more of an adventure, no supernatural elements, just a mad hunter.

30 Wednesday
10:45 AM Old Dark House, The (1932)
A storm strands travelers in a house full of dangerous eccentrics. Cast: Boris Karloff, Melvyn Douglas, Charles Laughton. Dir: James Whale. BW-72 mins, TV-G

Quite creepy!

31 Thursday

12:30 PM Mysterious Island (1961)
Escaped Civil War POWs end up on an island populated by giant animals. Cast: Michael Craig, Michael Callan, Joan Greenwood. Dir: Cy Endfield. C-101 mins, TV-G, CC, Letterbox Format

2:15 PM Son of Godzilla (1967)
Scientists get caught in the middle when Godzilla fights to protect his newborn son from prehistoric monsters. Cast: Tadao Takashima, Akira Kubo, Bibari Maeda. Dir: Jun Fukuda. C-86 mins, , Letterbox Format

3:45 PM Gorgon, The (1964)
A mythical monster turns men to stone in a remote European village. Cast: Christopher Lee, Peter Cushing, Richard Pasco. Dir: Terence Fisher. C-83 mins, TV-PG, Letterbox Format

5:15 PM They Came From Beyond Space (1967)
Scientists investigating a meteor shower uncover an alien invasion. Cast: Robert Hutton, Jennifer Jayne, Zia Mohyeddin. Dir: Freddie Francis. C-85 mins, TV-PG, Letterbox Format

6:45 PM Killer Shrews, The (1959)
A maniacal scientist creates a formula that turns your average shrew into a giant, man-killing beast. Cast: James Best, Ingrid Goude, Baruch Lumet. Dir: Ray Kellogg. BW-68 mins, TV-PG

Killer Shrews is one of my favorite B-horror films!

Well yes and no. If he had a budget Ed Wood could have had a real faboo movie. But even so, Plan 9 is deep...
You know that. That's why you brought it up. It is the deepest of all sci fi fliks... :whistling:

I had thought that he died in the midst of filming the the thing, but now as I understand it, Ed Wood used footage of Lugosi in the film after he had already died. Wood used a Christian group to finance it, but when they learned that it was to be about zombies, they forced him to change it to "sci-fi."

I saw it a long time ago on a late night horror show that had so many commercials that I could not tell the film from the commercials. The host first came on wearing a 'scary' costume, before cutting to the ads, thus the confusion. :p

Still, if you have not seen it, you might want to watch it.
