By "Steenbock," my friend Mike means the editing table. It had audio and film heads. That was how the dialogue tracks were married to image.

"Goliath's Head" was the 1st animated version of “Robot without a Face,” which was the 71st adventure and the 8th adventure published in the Tetsuwan Atom (Astroboy) Club near the end of of after the end of the 4 year B&W series. It was the 12th & 47th episode in the Japanese-language version and English-language version, respectively. As it was not in the B&W series, I have not yet published a review of it. It is reprinted in vol 8 of the Dark Horse.

Uran (Strange Birthday Present) review

thread for Strange Birthday Present (Uran) ("Uran the Tomboy")

I think the pronunciation ‘Urane’ was based upon the fact that ‘uran’ is Japanese-language version’s ‘uranium’ & that pronounciation is consistent with it.

Robio and Robiette was 1st animated in the 3rd or 4th season of the B&W series, & as such, was excluded from the English-language version. I have notes on all the versions, & maybe even a rudimentary review, but nothing published yet. It was 62nd manga adventure, and is reprinted in vol 16 of the Dark Horse manga.

Plant Man (Alsoar) thread

The Greatest Robot in the World – Parts 1 &2 I have written a review, but have yet to publish it. This story has not 4, but 5 versions, if you include the one by the contemporary manga artist whose name escapes me. Uran is greatly offended by her big brother’s reluctance to fight Pluto, so she dons one of his briefs, which of course is an actual garment just for this episode. I did create a thread full of images for both parts 1 & 2:

116 Biggest Robot part 1

117 Biggest Robot part 2

But there are no comparisons to other versions.

The Robot Vikings is the 2nd of 3 animated versions of ‘Gadem.’

Jeffbert’s review of “Gangor the Monster” (Vikings)

thread for Gangor

The Time Machine seems to be an adaptation of Blackjack’s 23rd manga adventure:

Kidnap "The President of a country is shot in the back of his head by an assassin. BJ is called in to save the President's life, and he accepts to perform an operation on him. But a telephone call is put through to BJ in the operation room: the kidnappers say that they will return his daughter only in exchange for the President's death. BJ is forced to choose between the lives of the President and Pinoko" (http://en.tezuka.co.jp/manga/sakuhin/subtitle/m089.html).

The 1980s Astroboy was # 27 & titled “Major Operations by Black Jack.”

The Robot Stuntman does have a basis in the B&W:

189 Confusion at the Shooting Studio, "Atom and Uran go to see the shooting of a film. There, they see robots that look exactly like themselves, and take part in the filming after secretly changing places. In the shooting studio, however, stunt robots are treated as harshly as if they were objects." (http://en-f.tezuka.co.jp/anime/sakuhin/subtitle/ts002.html)

I created a thread w/ images, but lost the host for them.

I just got a note back. The search is on for documentary footage of the dubbing.

I wonder if, similar to "Doctor Who," we might do brand new radio versions of the show? I know I can get Paul, Dave and Astro herself -- Patty.

But I promise you this: I am going to find the pilot, and it will be released to you one way or another. If we all have to re-record it, we will.

Documentary

Postby mikedemark » 17 years ago

Jay, I don't remember the documentary - do you know who shot it, or is that what you're trying to figure out?

BTW, it was my son, David (Crazyd2000) that turned me on to this forum. I had nearly forgotten this project, but was telling David about it a couple of years ago, and then googled Astro Boy and discovered that the DVD set had been released. I bought it, and now David has watched every episode more than once, and discovered this forum. He's been intermittently active on it for some time.

Jay, why don't you give Tom N a call at WHA? I bet he'd be glad to help, and if anyone has masters, it would be him. I have the master 1/4" reel of the theme song that we recorded, for some reason.

Great to connect with you again.

Mike
