Hi!
My name is Chrissi, I'm from Austria and I'm writing a bachelor thesis about japanese emoticons, like ^_^ or ;_;, and how the comic culture influences the fact, that japanese have their own smileys in computer communication.
That's why I'm studying old japanese comics, like Astroboy and I'm searching for faces that make this expressions: ^_^ ;_; >_< T_T ._. ...
Unfortunately I don't have the Astroboy manga or anime and that's why I want ask you, if you have seen Astroboy, or any other characters in Astroboy, making this expressions.
Please send me pictures and screenshots. My mail is ferret@gmx.at. This would help me finishing the thesis.
Thank you!

Hi Chrissi, and welcome aboard! It's nice to have another European around here.
Have a look at these threads here:
All 1980s Astro screenshots
All 2003s Astro screenshots
Perhaps they're able to deliver the Astroboy expressions you're searching for.

I have read a few things about emoticons. Maybe you know all of them but here are they out of order
I have read that emoticons originating from Asian countries (not only Japon) stress on the eyes while the ones originating from Western countries stress on the mouth.
On the anime part, the one image that comes to my mind is the link between the emoticon ^_^ and this image:
Hope it helps
... I mean ^_^

hi!
Thanks a lot for your help! ^_-
It's right, that american und europe Emoticons concentrate on the mouth, while the eyes are more important for the japanese Emoticons.
Do you often use japanese Emoticons?
In Germany and Austria there are many Manga-Boards where the users use japanese Emoticons more often than the americans.

Personnally, I use almost exclusively the "Western" variants, mostly the combinations with ':-' and a "mouth variant" among "()DP". There are a few exceptions, notably the "<_<" (which is : shifty : here). I am French, and I am not very in mangas (Astroboy is one of the few exceptions).
