You could also buy
this, it would be faster and cheaper than taking classes.

It's the US version, I own it and many times I watch it in English with the English subtitles - that way I can read what the original Japanese dialogues were while listening to a dubbing I can understand. Obviously you can also hear the Japanese track if you want.
For now, I'm interested to know the difference between the French and the English version ...
I'm not expert as you about the serie... you said that some scenes was cut in the french version and not in the english version ?
Yes, about 4 if not 5 minutes are missing in every French episode in comparison with the Japanese and English versions. Sometimes the plots are quite different from what they were supposed to be. Anything deemed "violent" was cut, so stories had to be rearranged to try to explain the missing parts.
The English version (well the US English version, because the Canadian English version seems to be the same version we got) suffered a little but it's still very close to the original Japanese version, except for the first two episodes that have been put together in one in the English (and French) versions.
We had started
this thread about the differences, but it's a long work and I've never completed it. Still, I had done a few episodes so it should give you an idea.
I don't know how far in your memory the series is, but I remember, as a young teenager, watching a rerun of the series and wonder why it was that the big robot had been buried below a mountain in just a few seconds or why Astro got hurt in a fall that didn't seem that bad, things like that. It never occured to me that there had been cuts at the time but there were some strange things. I hadn't noticed them when I was 7 or 8 though.
Half of the French series got out a few years ago in Quebec, but I don't know if it's still available. You can import it from Europe (be careful about the DVD PAL format and region though) or you can watch some episodes on YouTube to compare.
