Nice to be here !

Postby Darkgirl » 16 years ago

Hi everybody ! :)

I just want to tell you how much I'm glad to find a forum about Astroboy.

I'm the Darkgirl, I'm an Astro fan since the 80' (yes, I'm an adult llol), and I live in Québec City. That's why my speaking will make you laught for sure, because I'm a french speaking one. So, if I say something weird or if you don't understand what I write, I'm not afraid to face it and to correct mistakes. I never use any translator to express myself here, except for some words. So tank you for your understanding.

About Astro, I follow some episodes from the 80's, and I prefer English version, because the french one is a massacre. Same for the 2003's version. :astro:

I'll enjoy to talk with you. "See" ya ! :)

Bienvenue Darkgirl! :)

Don't worry about your English, it seems very good to me. Anyway, I'm a French speaking Quebecer myself and by now people here must be used to read some of my weird sentences from time to time, although hopefully after having written here for so many years there are less of them. :D Many of us do not have English as a first language.

Yes, the 1980 French version is a disaster except for the dubbing, which is excellent. At least we can tell ourselves that we've watched more than a hundred 1980 episodes since the plots are so different (well, many of them).

Welcome, Darkgirl!

Oh, don't worry. ^__^ I think your english is pretty good!

..Well, I havn't seen that dub, but I'll be sure to try and check it out. (I collect old dubs for the heck of it.)

:) Welcome, Dark Girl!

I'm a fan of the 80's Astroboy too. I like both the english & french dub, especially the french one since I used to watch the 80's series on a french/swiss channel back in the days. As for me, Flora Balzano's voice acting of the french 80's Astro still remains second to none.

It's indeed a shame the french 80's version got butchered that heavily, but the little game at each episode's end where Astro deliberately put a mistake in his adventure's synopsys kinda makes up for the lack of crucial scenes.

Well, it's too bad that they put so many mistakes in the episodes themselves :D

First time I realized about the really big differences between French and English versions, I had first thought I had simply completely misunderstood the English version (my native language is French too). I had watched again the English version, understanding again the same way. But this time I had spotted the missing scenes, and I understood what was going one: butchery in all its glory, same as Japanese/English but worse :d oh: Oh well, as pointed Astro forever, that makes as many more episodes
The real sign that someone has become a fanatic is that he completely loses his sense of humor about some important facet of his life. When humor goes, it means he's lost his perspective.

Thank you very much, guys ^^

Fortunatly, we have English to speak together, whatever our native language :)

About Astroboy, I would like to be able to understand japonese, at least to compare English and French from the original... maybe some courses one day lol
For now, I'm interested to know the difference between the French and the English version ...

I'm not expert as you about the serie... you said that some scenes was cut in the french version and not in the english version ?

You could also buy this, it would be faster and cheaper than taking classes. ;) It's the US version, I own it and many times I watch it in English with the English subtitles - that way I can read what the original Japanese dialogues were while listening to a dubbing I can understand. Obviously you can also hear the Japanese track if you want.

Yes, about 4 if not 5 minutes are missing in every French episode in comparison with the Japanese and English versions. Sometimes the plots are quite different from what they were supposed to be. Anything deemed "violent" was cut, so stories had to be rearranged to try to explain the missing parts.

The English version (well the US English version, because the Canadian English version seems to be the same version we got) suffered a little but it's still very close to the original Japanese version, except for the first two episodes that have been put together in one in the English (and French) versions.

We had started this thread about the differences, but it's a long work and I've never completed it. Still, I had done a few episodes so it should give you an idea.

I don't know how far in your memory the series is, but I remember, as a young teenager, watching a rerun of the series and wonder why it was that the big robot had been buried below a mountain in just a few seconds or why Astro got hurt in a fall that didn't seem that bad, things like that. It never occured to me that there had been cuts at the time but there were some strange things. I hadn't noticed them when I was 7 or 8 though.

Half of the French series got out a few years ago in Quebec, but I don't know if it's still available. You can import it from Europe (be careful about the DVD PAL format and region though) or you can watch some episodes on YouTube to compare.
