The show Kung Fu may indeed have introduced some of us to Asian culture. I include myself in that number of those who knew little of Asian culture before seeing the series. However, this would still have been the case, and perhaps even more so, had Bruce Lee played the role of Kwai Chang Caine. Yet, the TV execs felt unsure that an
actual Asian man in the role of an
Asian man would have appeal to American viewers, even though decades earlier Keye Luke, who would play Master Po in
Kung Fu actually portrayed detective James Lee Wong in the 6th (of 6) film in that series (Karloff had the role for the 1st 5 films), & had portrayed #1 son many times.
Yet, I understand the value of particular actors to our fond memories. Long before I ever heard that Bruce Lee was originally slated to be Caine, David Carradine
was Caine, and
had been Caine. When I thought of the program
Kung Fu, I naturally thought of David Carradine.
