HI- REMEMBER READING SOMEWHERE- some science fiction author said we would have television in a thousand years- so possible someone who loves ASTRO BOY'S adventures could be inspired to make some technology break-throughs needed for ASTRO BOY to be real- to me his boy's heart is his most amazing part- without that he would not be the ASTRO BOY we all love.
Maybe it is a silly question but while we are on the subject of how Astro's body works...in a story from the original manfa titled "Ivan the idiot" there's a robot which offers Astro something which looks like a taco. Astro tells this robot "sorry Ivan i don't need to eat 'cause I'm a robot" but for exmaple in Pluto we can see him eating an ice cream. So does his body need to take energy from food or doesn't it?

I do not know about any allusion to TV in old Scifi, but it would not surprise me.

There are a few variables in the Astroboy corpus; these may be adjusted to suit the current story. In the B&W #001, the Atom Chronicles, & the 01 of the 1980s, Atom eats, though it is not necessary. I know Jetter Mars also eats, but has very different ideas of what is yummy or icky, but cannot recall which episode. Perhaps in Ivan, Atom was wanting to save the little remaing food for the humans.
BTW, please check out my Review of Ivan the Fool
Urasawa has been very careful to remain faithful to the precedents established in earlier versions, while creating something truly unique. Atom wants to be human, or at least more human-like, so he eats ice cream. Though he apparently lacks any sense of taste, merely by pretending it is yummy is supposed to create an impression on his AI that should eventually result in a imagined sense of pleasure. I think in 001 when he ate doughnuts, he smiled as though he did taste them.

that was so funny.
Plus his face.
Didn't Tenma know he was a robot and couldn't eat?
Well, he CAN eat...he just has to take it out of his stomach later.
For example, in this episode, he ejects it out of his stomach (and shoots it with a laser...which was pretty funny, actually...)

In the manga, when he takes it out of his stomach, it comes out in a little baggie.
I think it's also mentioned that, by eating something, he can read out all the nutrients in the food. (In the 2003 anime, all he had to do was visually scan it...huh...)

Which ALSO brings to mention the fact that Astro is said to be able to use the bathroom in volume 7.
Tenma's Wife: Robots go to the bathroom?
Tenma: Sure, but not like humans. He has to get rid of the previous day's Uranium compounds...
...whatever that means... lol
