It may be better not to explain everything in any continuous fiction work. It gives the author more freedom in future plots. I don't know if Tezuka would have done that on purpose. It may be that he wanted to concentrate on the main storyline.

This may be true, but it is irrelevant to this thread's topic. You have made similar statements in other threads regardless of their topics or their most recent posts. We all know that Atom is cute, you need not remind us constantly.

Hrm... Actually, as I understand it, he knows he's a robot, and has no issue with it. He merely wants to be more human-like; to understand things like beauty and fear, that robots can't normally comprehend (from what I've read, anyway- my exposure to Astro Boy has been fairly limited, I'm sad to say). He seems to want to become a median for robots and humans- a sort of bridge between the two cultures (assuming robots have culture?) He feels there's nothing wrong with what he is, even though others don't see it that way, and he wants... well, what he wants seems to be something akin to world peace! He doesn't judge, it would seem.

As for the last name issue, ultimately, it should be whoever created him's responsibility to name him, right? And, err... I guess he takes his creator's name, even if he doesn't like it- not all of us do, anyway. I'd recently thought it'd be nice if he had a middle name, though.

I think you expressed that beautifully -- and I think you're absolutely spot-on! It was just the "emotional/maternal" part of me who sees a "little boy" -- and has that kind of reaction, but in my mind I do completely agree with your observations!

Certainly nothing wrong with that. Astro boy is a clearly a character that is designed to induce those kinds of feelings. If Astro one day decided he wanted an official last name and he couldn't have one, then I would be angry at whichever character said no. Your meant to feel for Astro, he has noble goals and is incredibly innocent at the same time.

However. Given that he never mentions it. I assume he either doesn't mind at all (I mean, he doesn't need another name to help him stand out) or he does actually have one on paper but it is never mentioned because its never that important.

Obviously, it must be Tenma. Because Tenma isn't just Tenma. Hes TARO Tenma. Tenma is the last name.

Here's a robot and robots don't need last names.

What is Atlas' last name?
What is Epsilon's last name?
What is Denkou's last name?

See what I mean?
